Hoad's Wood

The woodland here is proper Kent - dense, quiet, and the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Hoad's Wood sits just outside Bethersden, a small village that won't detain you long but makes a decent base if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Longberry Farm or Wildside Camping. Walk in and the trees close around you straight away. It's ancient woodland, which means the canopy is thick and the undergrowth stays interesting through most seasons.

This is walker territory, no question about it. Families with young kids will get restless after half an hour unless you're the type to spend an age turning over logs and looking for beetles. The real appeal here is the peace - that absence of anything tourist-polished. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. You just walk and observe.

Bring decent boots because it gets muddy, especially after rain. Spring is genuinely lovely when the bluebells come through, though they've been hit and miss across Kent in recent years. Autumn's good too if you're after that muffled forest-floor feeling. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you fancy wandering. There's no fee that we can establish, so it's a freebie - grab it while you're camping nearby. It's the sort of place that makes a proper day when combined with a walk around Bethersden itself and a good pub lunch. Perfectly honest, it's not Instagram-material, but that's rather the point.
