Hindscarth

The walk up Hindscarth from Keswick is proper fell work - steep, relentless, and absolutely worth it. This 889-metre peak sits in that sweet spot where it's challenging enough to feel like an achievement but not so brutal that day-trippers give up halfway. The views from the top sweep across Derwent Water and the Borrowdale Valley, and on a clear day you can pick out half a dozen other Lake District peaks in the distance.

It's a fell for walkers rather than casual strollers. Allow around three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness. The terrain is classic Lakeland - grassy slopes that can be boggy after rain, loose scree near the summit, and the kind of views that make you forget how knackered your legs are. Families with older kids who like a proper challenge will get the most from this, but younger children might find the final push demoralising.

There's no admission fee - this is fell walking, not a tourist attraction with gates. The nearest jumping-off point is Keswick itself, where you'll find parking and facilities. Both Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club and Castlerigg Hall Caravan, Camping, Glamping Park sit within five miles of town, making them ideal bases if you're planning a fell holiday. Hindscarth pairs well with nearby peaks like Cat Bells or Dale Head - you can string together a proper multi-peak walking break rather than just ticking off one summit. Best visited when the ground's dry, which in Cumbria means you'll want to avoid the wettest months.
