Hincheslea Wood

The New Forest floor gets properly spongy underfoot at Hincheslea Wood, and that's exactly when you know you're somewhere decent. It's a working forest - you'll see evidence of active management, timber operations, the lot - rather than some manicured country estate walk. The woodland itself is typical New Forest: oak and beech canopy, plenty of shade, and enough open glades to stop it feeling claustrophobic.

Walkers come here for the peace more than anything. It's close enough to New Milton that you can reach it easily, but far enough in that you shed most of the holiday park crowd. The paths are reasonably clear, though boggy patches after rain mean waterproof boots aren't optional. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a proper amble without rushing.

Families with older kids who actually enjoy walking will get on well here. Younger ones might tire quickly - there's no play equipment, no café, no obvious attractions beyond the trees themselves. That's not a criticism; it's just what it is. History buffs won't find interpretation boards or heritage stories, so if you're after context, you'll need local knowledge or a guidebook.

Stay at Lytton Lawn or Shorefield - both within five miles - and you've got the New Forest on your doorstep without fighting for space at the more famous spots. Free access, naturally. Go early morning on weekends if you want it to yourself.
