Hill Top

The walk up Hill Top from Skipton takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland - the kind of place where the wind cuts across the open ground and you feel properly small. It's not a savage climb, more of a steady tramp across rough pasture with the Pennines spreading out in front of you. The summit itself is a bit underwhelming if you're honest - there's a trig point, some stones, views across to Pendle Hill on a clear day. But that's almost beside the point. What makes Hill Top work is the walk itself, the fact you can do it in an afternoon from Skipton and still be back in time for tea.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of bog and rough ground will find it rewarding, though younger children might find the moorland landscape a touch monotonous. The views reward you properly at the top - on a good day you're looking across miles of Craven countryside. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not dallying.

It's a natural fit with a stay at Draughton Heights Campsite just down the road - close enough for a proper walk without needing the car. The nearby Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite also puts you within easy reach. Hill Top works best as part of a bigger Skipton week rather than a destination in itself, but the moorland walking around here is consistently solid. Go on a dry day if you can manage it.
