A proper working cinema in Fort William - the sort of place locals actually use rather than a tourist trap. Highland Cinema shows mainstream films and the odd art house offering, with a decent screen and reasonable seats that don't make you feel like you're watching from a cupboard.

It's the sort of evening activity that makes sense when the Highlands weather turns grim, which is often. You're not paying through the nose like you would in London, and the staff seem to actually care about the place. Doors open from 10am on weekdays and Sundays, stretching to 10:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, so there's flexibility if your campsite routine allows it.

Families with kids will appreciate having something indoors that isn't another museum about whisky or clan history. Teenagers especially - this beats sitting in the van playing on their phones. Give yourself two hours door-to-door: half an hour to get into town from Glen Nevis Caravan Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park, watch your film, grab a bite.

Worth it? Only if you're actually desperate for a film. The Highlands are for walking and scenery - if you're spending your entire holiday indoors at the cinema, you've made a tactical error. But as a backup plan on day three when everyone's soaked through and needs cheering up, it does the job. Check what's on before you book your park stay - there's no point turning up hoping to see a blockbuster if they're showing documentaries about Scottish farming.
