Higher Hogshead

Higher Hogshead rises above Rossendale as a proper fell-walker's objective - nothing fancy, just honest moorland with views that stretch across Lancashire when the weather plays ball. The summit sits at 1,845 feet and the approach is straightforward enough for most people, though the last section gets a bit boggy depending on season.

The real appeal here is the accessibility. It's not a slog that demands hours of your day, yet stands tall enough to feel genuinely rewarding once you've topped out. You get decent vistas across the South Pennines on clear days, with the valley floor and surrounding peaks laying out beneath you like a proper reward for the effort. The moorland itself is typical Pennine gritstone country - windswept, golden with heather, sometimes moody with low cloud.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a solid hour-and-a-half outing for reasonably fit people, though families with younger legs might need longer. There's no charge, naturally - it's open moorland. The terrain can be marshy in winter and spring, so tackle it when conditions are drier if you've got a choice.
