Highbank Lake

The water at Highbank Lake sits still and dark, ringed by trees that drop their reflections like oil paint. It's a proper quiet spot, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of your own thoughts rattling around. East Yorkshire doesn't shout about its lakes the way the Lake District does, and that's rather the point. This one sits just outside York, making it an easy detour if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm is closest at just over three miles away.

You can walk the perimeter if the mood takes you, though the path isn't manicured or signposted like a tourist honeypot. Bird watchers come here regularly and seem to know what they're looking for. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before boredom sets in, unless they're the type to throw stones and chase dragonflies, in which case they'll stretch it to an hour. The water itself is peaceful rather than dramatic. No restaurants, no facilities, no drama.

What it offers is space and a bit of solitude without driving hours north. Pair it with a walk around York's walls or a mooch through the surrounding farmland, and it works as a morning's outing. Acorn Glade Glamping and The Spinney Wild Camping are both within five miles if you're camping in the area. Go early on a weekday if you want it to yourself. Nothing special about Highbank Lake, but sometimes that's exactly what you need.
