High Spy

The walk up High Spy isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you've underestimated it. From Keswick, it's a proper Catbells-adjacent climb that rewards you with views across Derwent Water that genuinely take your breath away - though you'll already be a bit breathless by the time you reach the top.

This is a fell for walkers who want the drama without committing to a full day's fell-bagging. The summit sits at 653 metres and offers that classic Lake District panorama: the water shimmering below, Skiddaw across the way, and on a clear day you can see right down the valley. Count on about two hours up and back from the road.

The path itself is straightforward - not technical, just relentless. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the gradient dull. It's the sort of walk where you feel you've properly earned lunch afterwards.

Timing matters here. Early morning cuts down crowds, and the afternoon light off the water is exceptional. Weather, as always, is everything - low cloud and you're walking through soup.

If you're staying at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or the five-star Castlerigg Hall nearby, this works as a morning mission before heading back to base. It's not a destination in itself, but a proper little peak with genuine fell-walking credentials. Worth the effort.
