About High Scawdel

High Scawdel isn't the Lake District's most famous fell, but it delivers proper views without the crowds you'd get at Catbells or Skiddaw. Standing just under 2,000 feet, it's a genuine climb - steep in places, boggy in others - but the effort pays off once you're up. The summit opens out across Derwentwater to the north and east, with Blencathra and Helvellyn rising across the valley. On a clear day the ridge walk along Scawdel Pike is worth taking time over. It's less of a tourist trap than the showier peaks near Keswick, which means you'll actually find space to breathe and enjoy the view.

Walkers with some fitness will find it most rewarding - it's not a gentle stroll, but it's not a full mountaineering challenge either. Families with older kids capable of sustained climbing will manage fine. The route from Keswick (about 5.5 miles away) takes roughly four to five hours including a proper break at the top, so don't underestimate it. Go early if you can, especially in summer; even High Scawdel draws people by mid-morning.

If you're based at Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, both within striking distance, this makes a proper day out that beats fighting for space on the honeypot peaks. The moorland terrain changes constantly as you climb, and the descent's steep enough to keep your legs honest on the way down.
