Stay at one of the caravan parks nearby - Carsington Water or Lickpenny are convenient to Matlock - and you can combine this with walks along the valley, the Peak Rail heritage line, and the caves. Spring and summer are decent times to visit when the volunteers are more likely to be around and the light is better for photographs. Parking's straightforward and it won't cost you much, if anything.
