High Low

High Low is a modest peak in the Hope Valley that punches above its weight for walkers after a proper hill without the crowds. You won't find queues or visitor centres here - it's just you, the ridge, and views across the limestone dales that stretch toward Mam Tor. The walk itself is straightforward rather than technical, which means families with older kids can tackle it without drama, though younger ones might find the final push a bit steep for their legs.

The real appeal here is accessibility. From Hope Valley's village base, you're looking at a couple of hours up and back, making it perfect if you want actual walking rather than a postcard photo stop. Spring and early summer are lovely - the paths dry quickly and you'll avoid the winter mudslide that catches a lot of people out. Allow a good two hours if you're stopping to breathe properly halfway up.

What makes this useful for a caravan holiday is location. Laneside Caravan Park sits just 3.3 miles away, and Castleton's campsite is 4.5 miles - both reasonable bases for exploring the White Peak. High Low fits nicely between Mam Tor's popular scramble and Cave Dale's short sharp burst. It's the sort of walk that works when the famous spots are rammed, and honestly, the view across the valley floor is more interesting than the peak itself. Real enough without being showy.
