About High Knowes
This is straightforward hill-walking country. You get genuine solitude here, especially midweek. The path is reasonably well-trodden and marked, though conditions underfoot can be boggy after rain - bring decent boots. The summit sits at around 2,300 feet, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District. On a murky one, you're mostly walking through cloud, which is atmospheric but less rewarding visually.
Walkers and outdoor types will find it a sensible afternoon objective. It's too short and straightforward for serious mountaineers, but families with teenagers capable of a proper hill walk will manage fine. The youngest kids might struggle with the sustained gradient, but there's nothing technical about it.
Time your visit for late morning to catch the light at the summit. Early or late season tends to be clearest. Moffat itself is only a few miles away - good for supplies and a warm drink afterwards. If you're staying at Howslack Farm caravan site nearby, it's an excellent half-day excursion alongside exploring the broader Lowland hiking opportunities in the area. No entry fees that I'm aware of, and parking is free at the trailhead.
