HIGH HEAD CASTLE

High Head Castle sits on the edge of the Carlisle plain like a stubborn old sentinel nobody visits much anymore. It's a pele tower - one of those defensive structures built along the Anglo-Scottish border when life was genuinely precarious - and frankly, it's not much to look at if you're expecting something grandiose. The tower itself is squat and weathered, stone the colour of old pewter, and you can see why medieval families would huddle inside during raids rather than venture out.

The real draw is the walk up to it and the views back across Cumbrian farmland. On a clear day you can actually see why someone bothered building here at all - it's high ground with sightlines. Allow thirty minutes to reach it from the nearest parking, longer if you're with kids who dawdle. Bring proper boots; the ground gets boggy after rain.

This isn't a day-trip destination on its own - you'd be done in under two hours. But if you're camping at Pasturewood Holidays or Thornfield nearby, and you fancy a proper walk that finishes with a genuine historical landmark rather than just a field, it's worth the detour. Historians will appreciate seeing an actual working fortification rather than a sanitised museum version. Others might find it a bit sparse. The admission appears free, though there's nothing there to stop you wandering right up.

Best visited in late spring or early autumn when the moorland's manageable and the light doesn't disappear at three o'clock.
