High Hare Head

High Hare Head isn't the sort of fell that stops you in your tracks. It's a modest 340-metre bump on the moorland north of Skipton, the kind of walk you'd do on a drizzly afternoon when the bigger peaks are fogged in. The summit itself is unremarkable - boggy, windswept, with stones piled into a cairn that's seen better days. But that's rather the point.

What you get up here is genuine Pennine moorland. The views stretch across rolling fells toward Wharfedale, and on a clear day you can pick out the bleaker contours of the moors stretching eastward. The walk from Skipton takes roughly ninety minutes depending on your pace and which route you choose. Most people come up from the town itself, cutting northeast through farmland before climbing onto the open fell. It's a solid outing for hill-walkers wanting something straightforward - nothing technical, just steady legs and waterproof boots.

Families with younger children might find it a slog. Teenagers or keen walkers will get genuine satisfaction from the moorland feel and the solitude you'll likely find up there. The nearest proper facilities are back in Skipton itself, a market town with cafes and pubs worth lingering in after.

If you're camping nearby - Bolton Abbey Estate is just over a mile away, or Catgill Farm at 1.3 miles - High Hare Head works as a half-day mission that doesn't require any special equipment or booking. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged. Midweek visits feel far less crowded than weekends.
