High Green Field Knott

The walk up High Green Field Knott rewards you with views across the Settle area that genuinely justify the leg work. It's a modest fell rather than a dramatic peak - you're looking at around 1,700 feet - but the approach from Settle is straightforward enough, taking you through proper Yorkshire Dales countryside with stone walls and open moorland.

On a clear day, the vistas south toward Penyghent and west across Ribblesdale are excellent. The summit itself is windswept and bare, with rough grass and limestone outcrops. On a grey day it feels bleak; on a decent afternoon it's cracking. Most people will manage the return leg in three to four hours without breaking stride.

This is ideal terrain for walkers who want a genuine fell experience without the crowds you'd hit at better-known peaks. Families with older children will do well here, though younger legs might find the moorland stretches a bit tedious. History buffs won't find much on the summit itself, but the path takes you past limestone quarrying evidence and traditional field boundaries that speak volumes about Dales farming life.

Base yourself at Ribblesdale Pods or Stablefell Holidays just down the road in Settle, and you've got proper holiday park facilities without abandoning the wild landscape. It's worth fitting this walk into a broader Dales circuit - Penyghent and Whernside aren't far away if you're feeling ambitious. Bring a map and decent boots. The weather changes fast up there.
