Herrock Hill

The walk up Herrock Hill is a proper workout, but from the top you've got views across Mid Wales that make the climb worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - nothing daunting - but the effort required means you won't be fighting crowds of casual walkers, which is a genuine plus.

The route from Presteigne takes you through decent farmland with clear paths, and the summit rewards you with sweeping countryside in all directions. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels increasingly rare.

Allow two to three hours depending on fitness. Walkers will appreciate it far more than kids, though it's doable for anyone reasonably active. The ground can be boggy in spots, so proper boots matter. There's no facilities at the top - just views and wind, usually both in abundance.

If you're based at one of the three excellent holiday parks nearby - Rockbridge Park, Hush Hush Glamping, or Presteigne Holiday Park are all within a few miles - Herrock Hill works well as a morning or afternoon excursion. Presteigne itself is close enough for supplies and a decent pub afterwards. It's the sort of walk that justifies the detour if you're already in the area, but probably not worth a special trip on its own. Pair it with other local walks rather than making it your sole objective.
