Heritage Wood

You'll find Heritage Wood just outside Ashbourne, a proper woodland walk that takes you through some genuinely old trees and bits of industrial history tucked away among the undergrowth. It's the sort of place where you stumble across old stone workings and realise people have been grafting in these woods for centuries - charcoal burners, lead miners, all of that.

The wood itself is worth a wander if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Carsington Fields or Callow Top. It's not dramatic or anything, but it's got character. You get a sense of what these Derbyshire woodlands actually meant to people historically, rather than just walking through trees. The paths are decent enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after forty minutes.

Timing-wise, allow an hour or so unless you're really into the archaeology side of things. There's no visitor centre that I'm aware of, and you won't find cafes or facilities - bring a map or download the route beforehand because signage is sparse. Best to go when it's dry; the ground gets boggy otherwise.

If you're camping in the area and want a low-key afternoon that feels a bit different from the standard park routine, it's worth the short drive from Ashbourne. Don't expect something flashy. Do expect proper woodland and a bit of local history if you know where to look.
