The woodland around Holly Wood, just outside Ashbourne, is proper walker territory. You're looking at a genuine nature reserve with mature trees, woodland paths, and enough green to blow the cobwebs away for an afternoon. It's the sort of place where you'll actually spot things if you're patient - birds, perhaps some woodland mammals if you're lucky, and the kind of quiet that city folk seem to forget exists.

The reserve works best for anyone who genuinely enjoys being among trees rather than ticking off views. Families with restless younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, but if you've got teenagers who can manage a decent walk, or you're the type who gets something out of spotting a nuthatch, you'll get your money's worth. It's free to access, which is always welcome.

You can lose a solid two to three hours here depending on which paths you take and how often you stop to listen. The best light is early morning or late afternoon when things are quieter. Winter's actually decent if you don't mind the cold - fewer insects, clearer sight lines through the branches.

Stay at Callow Top or Sandybrook Lodges nearby and you're well positioned. Both are within easy reach of Ashbourne itself, so you can combine woodland time with the proper town facilities. It's an honest spot - nothing flashy, just good straightforward woodland walking that doesn't demand much of you except a decent pair of boots.
