Helsby Quarry Nature Reserve

The old quarry at Helsby, just outside Frodsham, has been quietly transformed into something worth the detour if you're camping or caravanning in the area. It's a working nature reserve now - the kind of place where you'll spot grasshoppers, butterflies and the occasional slower-moving reptile among the scrubland and exposed red sandstone cliffs. The quarry itself is still visible, those raw cliff faces a reminder of what was dug out here decades ago.

Walking the reserve takes about an hour if you're not in a rush, though you could potter for longer. The paths are decent enough, though a bit muddy after rain - proper walking boots worth considering. It's genuinely interesting for anyone keen on geology or local wildlife, less so if you're after dramatic views or Instagram moments. Kids might manage it, but they'd probably get bored without a specific interest in spotting things.

Free to access, and it sits nicely within striking distance of the holiday parks clustered around Frodsham - The Ridgeway is barely over a mile away. If you're staying at Delamere Forest or any of the larger sites, it's a decent morning walk to add to your park itinerary. Don't expect crowds or facilities. Just bring a notebook, maybe binoculars, and come when the weather's half decent.
