Helman Tor

The walk up Helman Tor takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, though most people do. It's a proper modest peak rising out of the moorland just outside Bodmin - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day the views across mid-Cornwall are genuinely worth the effort. The tor itself is crowned with a stone cairn and the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, which adds a bit of archaeological weight to what might otherwise feel like a casual stroll. From the top you can see all the way to the coast on a good day, and the surrounding moorland rolls out in every direction with barely a building in sight. The ascent is straightforward but the ground gets boggy in places, so proper boots are sensible rather than optional. There's no café, no facilities, no visitor centre - you're coming here for the walk and the view, not hand-holding. This works brilliantly as a morning sortie if you're camped at Mena Farm or The Camping Field, both just down the road. You could comfortably fit it into a larger Bodmin Moor loop if you're spending a few days in the area. The whole outing takes maybe ninety minutes door-to-door, making it ideal for families who want fresh air without committing to a full day trek. Winter visits can be atmospheric if you don't mind wind and low cloud, but spring through early autumn is really when this corner of Cornwall shows itself properly.
