Breney Common

The moorland around Breney Common, just outside Bodmin, is proper windswept and wild - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've left civilisation behind. It's a nature reserve managed by Cornwall Wildlife Trust, and what you're really here for is the open heathland itself: gorse, heather, and bracken rolling across undulating terrain with views that stretch for miles when the weather plays ball.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The ground is boggy in places and the paths aren't manicured, which is exactly why it works. You'll spot adders if you're lucky (and careful), listen for stonechats and linnets, and if you time it right in late summer the heather bloom is worth the trip alone. It's not a stroll-and-sit-down kind of reserve - you're meant to actually walk it, which means allowing at least two hours if you want to see anything beyond the car park.

Birders should absolutely make the effort; the open moorland attracts raptors and it's genuinely good for spotting. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on instant gratification, though teenagers keen on photography or nature spotting will be content for hours.
