Hellifield Moor Top

The walk up Hellifield Moor Top rewards you with a proper panorama across the Pennine Edge - the kind of view that makes you understand why people keep coming back to this corner of Lancashire. It's not the highest fell around Skipton, but the ridge walk itself is what counts, rolling gently across moorland with the landscape opening up in every direction.

You'll spend somewhere between two and four hours on this one, depending on your pace and whether you're the type to linger. The terrain is straightforward - moorland underfoot, good paths most of the way, though it gets boggy after rain so waterproof boots earn their weight. Families with older kids (eight and up) will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a long stretch with not much to hold their attention at the top beyond the views themselves.

This works beautifully as part of a wider walking trip in the area. If you're staying at Malham Glamping Pods or one of the other sites nearby, you can string together several walks without driving far - Hellifield sits well between other moorland walks and the limestone scenery closer to Malham. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though spring and autumn are when the light does something special up there.

Go on a clear day or don't bother. The views are the whole point, and cloud cover turns it into a fairly unremarkable trudge across moorland. Come armed with a proper map - signposting isn't brilliant and the moor can be confusing when visibility drops.
