Hellbeck Wood

The woodland paths through Hellbeck Wood offer proper respite from the Cumbrian fells if you're after something gentler. It's a modest forest near Armathwaite - not a destination that'll take your breath away, but the sort of place that rewards a quiet afternoon ramble through beech and oak.

You're walking through mixed woodland here, with the beck running alongside the trails creating that genuine forest-floor atmosphere. The paths are straightforward enough for families with decent walkers in tow, though it can be boggy after rain so waterproof boots aren't a bad shout. There's something undeniably pleasant about it - dappled light through the canopy, the sound of the stream - but I'd not overstate what's on offer. An hour or ninety minutes is about the right amount of time to see what it's got.

Historically minded visitors might find the area interesting given Armathwaite's ancient settlement history, but the wood itself won't teach you much. It's more valuable as a walkers' break between bigger lake-district excursions or as a peaceful spot whilst based at one of the nearby sites like Englethwaite Hall or Eden Valley Glamping, both within easy reach.

Access appears unrestricted and free, which is typical for Cumbrian woodland. Best visited on a dry day when the paths aren't churned up - summer months will be kindest to your footwear. If you're camping locally and fancy stretching your legs without a serious expedition, it'll do the job. Just don't expect it to be the highlight of your holiday.
