The viewing area at Heathrow's Terminal 5 gives you an unexpectedly good vantage point to watch aircraft thundering down the runway. You're standing on the observation deck looking out across the tarmac as massive jets line up for departure - it's properly loud and genuinely thrilling if you're into planes. The facility itself is fairly basic: windows, maybe a café, nothing fancy. Most people spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if they're glued to the action during peak hours.

It's brilliant for plane-spotting enthusiasts and kids who haven't lost their fascination with big flying things - though fair warning, very young children might find the noise startling. If you're heading to Terminal 5 for a flight anyway, it's worth a pre-departure wander. As a dedicated outing from Staines, though, it's a bit thin. You're looking at forty minutes to an hour max before you've seen what there is to see.

The nearby parks tell a different story. Penton Park in Chertsey (3.7 miles away) and Weybridge Park Estates (6 miles distant) are far better bets for a proper park holiday. Use the viewing point as a quick add-on if the timing works, not as your main event. It costs nothing to walk through the terminal, but don't expect world-class facilities or hours of entertainment. Practical tip: go early morning when the apron's busiest, or late afternoon. Midday is usually quieter.
