Bedfont Lakes Country Park

A string of lakes created from old gravel workings, Bedfont Lakes sits just outside Staines and gives you a proper dose of nature without having to drive far from Surrey's commuter belt. The park spans three interconnected lakes - each one surrounded by woodland and grassland, with walking paths threading through the lot. You'll see wildfowl, the occasional heron, and on a decent day the whole place feels surprisingly removed from the A30 that rumbles past nearby.

The setup works best for families after a gentle afternoon stroll, or serious birdwatchers with binoculars and a spotting guide. There's no café or visitor centre to speak of, so bring a packed lunch if you're planning to stay more than an hour. The walking is flat and easy - no scrambling required - making it suitable for pushchairs and older visitors who'd rather not tackle hills.

Staines is the nearest town, though Chertsey lies just three miles away and has its own camping options if you're looking to base yourself in the area. Several Caravan Club sites cluster around Chertsey, Laleham, and Walton-on-Thames within easy striking distance. Admission appears to be free, which takes the sting out of a mediocre afternoon weather-wise.

It's less dramatic than Surrey's proper country estates, and you won't find any rare species that'll make you weep. But for unwinding between pitches or killing a few hours with the family, it ticks the box. Go early on a weekday if you can - weekends bring dog walkers by the handful.
