Hazler Hill

The walk up Hazler Hill rewards you with proper views across the Church Stretton valley - one of those spots where you can see why people bother hiking in Shropshire at all. It's a modest peak by most standards, but that's precisely the point. You get the satisfaction of a summit without needing fell boots and a packed lunch that could feed a family.

The ascent from Church Stretton takes the better part of an hour depending on your pace and which route you choose. The paths are well-trodden, manageable for reasonably fit families, and the views only improve as you climb. On a clear day the Long Mynd dominates the horizon to the west, and you can pick out the Stretton Hills rolling away in various directions. It's the kind of walk where you'll understand why locals keep coming back.

Go early to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends when Church Stretton's walking crowd gets going. The hill itself is free - you're just walking on open access land - and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which keeps things simple. Allow two hours return if you're not rushing.

Stay at one of the nearby camps - Small Batch is closest at just 1.6 miles out, or Mountain Edge Shropshire if you want log cabins and a bit more comfort. Both put you within spitting distance of the hill and the wider Stretton valley's walking network. This isn't a full day's entertainment, but it's exactly the sort of half-morning walk that makes a camping holiday tick.
