Hazelbush Hill

The walk up Hazelbush Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Lowlands - on a clear day you can see right across to the Southern Uplands. It's a proper little peak rather than a mountain, sitting just outside Moffat, which makes it ideal if you're staying in the area but don't fancy a full day in the high hills.

The ascent itself is manageable without being a doddle. You're looking at a good couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness, though locals clearly know it well enough to make it feel less touristy than some Scottish peaks. The landscape around here is rolling farmland mixed with rougher moorland - neither dramatic nor dull, but genuinely pleasant.

Families with decent hill legs will manage it fine. Small children might find it a slog rather than an adventure. Walkers passing through Moffat will find it a solid morning's excursion, and the proximity to Howslack Farm caravan site means you could easily slot it into a wider Dumfries & Galloway trip without any messing about with transport.

It's free, obviously - being a hill. Best tackled on days when the cloud sits low on the higher peaks further north; when visibility's poor elsewhere, Hazelbush often catches decent weather. The ground can be wet underfoot after rain, so proper boots are worth the effort. Worth the detour if you're in the area and want something achievable rather than epic.
