Hawkstone Park Follies

A sprawling woodland estate just outside Shrewsbury, Hawkstone Park Follies is a proper walker's destination rather than a casual stroll. The main draw is the network of marked trails threading through ancient trees, with various follies and viewpoints scattered across the grounds - stone towers, arches, and ruins that feel genuinely atmospheric rather than theme-park tacky.

Expect to spend two to three hours here minimum if you want to do it justice. The terrain is mixed: some flat stretches along woodland paths, but also decent climbs that'll get your calves working. The follies themselves aren't architecturally mind-blowing, but they make good stopping points and photo opportunities, especially if you've got kids who need something tangible to aim for rather than just "walk through trees."

HistoryNerd types will appreciate the 18th-century origins - this was deliberately designed as a picturesque landscape back when that sort of thing mattered. Walkers should come here over other nature reserves in the region. The layout encourages proper exploration rather than a quick loop.

If you're staying at Hawk Lake Caravan Park or any of the other sites dotted within a few miles, this is an excellent morning or afternoon activity without needing to travel far. Bring proper footwear - it gets muddy - and check conditions beforehand as woodland paths can be surprisingly slippery after rain. Closest facilities are in Shrewsbury, so don't rely on amenities at the park itself.
