Haughmond Hill - Viewpoint

The walk up Haughmond Hill rewards you with one of the best views across Shropshire you'll find without much effort. From the top, Shrewsbury sprawls out below - the Severn doing its characteristic loops, the castle catching light on a clear day, and the Welsh hills darkening the horizon beyond. It's steep enough to feel like proper exercise, but not so punishing that you can't chat on the way up.

The summit itself is modest - a trig point and a bench, really - but the 360-degree outlook is genuinely absorbing. On a decent day you can see for miles, which makes it popular with walkers and photographers who know the area. If you're staying at Springfield Riverside Camping just down the road, this is the obvious half-day walk: gets the blood moving, delivers a view worth the climb, and brings you back in time for lunch. Most people reckon on an hour to get up and perhaps 45 minutes coming down, depending on how long you linger at the top.

The hill itself has monastic ruins at the base - Haughmond Abbey - which adds a thin layer of history if you fancy poking about. Fair warning though: it's not a destination to hang about on for hours. You come for the view, take in the space and the air, and move on. That's exactly its appeal. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you chose Shropshire in the first place.
