Colins Rough

Colins Rough is a proper woodland walk just outside Shrewsbury, the kind of place that rewards you for turning off the main road. It's essentially a managed forest with good footpaths threading through mature trees - perfect if you want a proper walk without needing to trek into the hills. The terrain is relatively gentle, so it suits families with older kids and anyone after a straightforward woodland ramble rather than a navigation challenge.

You'll find yourself under decent canopy cover, which matters if the weather's iffy. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers; autumn turns the whole place amber and rust. There's something restorative about being among trees after a stretch in town, and Shrewsbury's just ten minutes down the road if you need supplies or coffee afterwards.

It's free to access, and you can easily do a loop in an hour or two depending on how you wander. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. If you're camping at Ebury Hill or Beaconsfield - both very close - this is an obvious evening stroll or morning activity before heading elsewhere. It won't keep you occupied for a full day, but combined with a proper park base like Springfield Riverside a few miles further out, it rounds out a decent Shropshire stay nicely. Not dramatic or showy, just decent woodland on your doorstep.
