You won't find much fanfare here - it's functional rather than flashy - but that's rather the point. This is where the forest's conservation team operates from, and it's your starting point for understanding what makes this place tick.

The forest itself is the real draw. Ancient woodland, open grassland, a lake, and footpaths that wind through centuries of carefully managed landscape - you can spend a full day here without running into the crowds you'd face at honeypot sites. The Estate Office can provide information about the best routes and what's seasonal, whether that's bluebells in spring or fungi in autumn. Walkers will get the most from this; the terrain is gently undulating rather than challenging, which suits families with children reasonably well, though toddlers might struggle on some muddier stretches.

It's free to access the forest, which is brilliant value. Allow at least three hours if you're doing any serious walking - longer if you've got kids who want to explore every fallen log.
