Hastings Aquarium

The Hastings Aquarium sits right on the seafront, built into the cliffs themselves - you can't miss the Victorian entrance. It's a proper old-school affair, the sort of place that's been showing off its fish tanks to generations of families, and it still works. You get the standard tropical fish, seahorses, eels, the usual suspects. Nothing flashy or trying too hard, just competent aquarium work.

For young kids it's worth a solid hour - maybe ninety minutes if they're really into spotting fish. Older children tend to lose interest quicker. Adults visiting alone might find it a bit slight for the admission fee, but it makes a useful rainy-day option when the beach isn't appealing. The rock pools outside are often more compelling, to be honest.

The location is the real selling point. Pop out the back and you're on the promenade with views across the bay. Hastings town centre is a short walk, so you can combine it with fish and chips or a rummage through the antique shops. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Combe Haven or Coghurst Hall are closest - it's an easy trip without needing the car.

Check opening hours and admission prices before you go. It's the sort of attraction that changes its operation seasonally, and you don't want a wasted journey.
