Guestling Hill

The view from Guestling Hill is one of those East Sussex surprises that catches you off guard - you're not expecting much from what amounts to a modest rise just outside Hastings, but the panorama across the coast and inland countryside genuinely rewards the climb. It's nothing dramatic, mind you. No dramatic clifftop theatrics or vertiginous drops. What you get instead is a proper working view of the Hastings area from above, the kind of vantage point that lets you understand how the town sits between sea and downland.

The walk up takes twenty minutes at a leisurely pace from the nearby residential streets. It's popular with locals doing their morning loop - the sort of place where dog walkers outnumber tourists. Families with younger kids will manage it without complaint, though there's nothing to do once you've reached the top except look, take photos, and perhaps sit on the grass for a bit. Teenagers might find it brief.

Going in autumn or winter pays dividends. Spring brings crowds from the nearby holiday parks - Coghurst Hall is barely a mile away, and Beaulieu Farm Campsite sits just as close - so if you're based at one of those and fancy something low-key that doesn't eat into a full afternoon, this works nicely. Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour if you're not rushing, less if you just want the views. It's the sort of place that justifies itself only if you're already in the area. Don't drive from miles around for it, but if you're staying at a local park over half-term, it's worth knowing about.
