About Hart Crag
This is walker territory, pure and simple. Not the gently rambling sort - you need decent fitness and appropriate boots. The terrain's rough underfoot, particularly once you're on the fell proper, and there's a scree section that demands care in wet weather. Families with younger children will find it punishing; teenagers who actually enjoy walking would get plenty from it.
The climb takes roughly two to two-and-a-half hours depending on fitness, so allow three hours minimum for the return journey without stopping. Best avoided in mist - the views vanish entirely and navigation becomes tedious. Spring through autumn works well; winter can be treacherous with ice. Completely free, obviously, and you can park near the footpath entrance.
If you're based at Lakeside Retreat Glamping or staying near Great Langdale Campsite, Hart Crag pairs well with other eastern fell walks. It's not a casual stroll, but it's a genuine fell experience without the crowds you'd encounter on Helvellyn or Catbells.
