High Hartsop Dodd

The climb up High Hartsop Dodd is short and sharp - you'll be at the summit in under an hour from the valley floor near Penrith. What makes it worth the effort is the view. The fell itself sits right above Brothers Water, so you're looking down onto this proper postcard lake with the higher peaks of the Fairfield range rising beyond it. It's the kind of vantage point where you suddenly understand why people walk in the Lakes at all.

The route is straightforward rather than spectacular - moorland and grass most of the way - but the payoff comes at the top. On a clear day you can see right across to Helvellyn and down the valley towards Ambleside. In poor visibility it's a bit of a slog, to be honest. Twenty minutes in cloud and you're just following sheep tracks.

This is brilliant for families who want a proper fell walk without committing to a three-hour expedition. Older kids usually manage it without complaint. Solo walkers and photographers will appreciate how quiet it stays - you won't be jostling for space at the summit like you would on the busier peaks.

Allow around two hours door-to-door. It's free and always open - it's a fell. If you're based at Lakeside Retreat Glamping or Sykeside Camping Park, both within a couple of miles, you could knock this out before breakfast and still have half the day left. Don't go in heavy rain unless you're properly equipped - the descent gets slippery fast.
