Harrison Stickle

The rocky summit of Harrison Stickle rises 736 metres above Great Langdale, a proper fell rather than a gentle hill walk. You'll earn the view on this one - it's a relentless scramble up scree and loose rock, taking most people between two and three hours from the valley floor. The payoff is a landscape that stretches from the Langdale Pikes across to Windermere and beyond, all spread out beneath you like a proper Lake District postcard.

Walkers with decent legs and fell experience will get the most from this. It's not a casual stroll, and the final push to the summit involves scrambling that'll test your nerve and your knees on the descent. Young families might find it ambitious unless the kids are already comfortable on mountain terrain. That said, the route from Great Langdale Campsite - just over a mile away - is straightforward enough, and the fell is busy enough on good weekends that you won't feel exposed.

It's free to climb, obviously. No facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. The best light hits the view around mid-afternoon, though early starts catch you fewer tourists. Weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast before you head up - cloud rolling in kills the entire point.

Stay at Great Langdale Campsite or Great Langdale Glamping if you want to be right at the trailhead, or base yourself at Lakeside Retreat Glamping a few miles down the valley for a bit more comfort. Either way, you're positioned for a solid day's fell walking.
