Harley's Mountain

The walk up Harley's Mountain rewards you with views that stretch across the border country between Herefordshire and Wales. It's not particularly high - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the vantage point is genuinely useful. You get a proper sense of how the landscape folds and shifts around here, especially if you've spent the morning pottering around Presteigne itself.

The ascent is straightforward enough for most fitness levels, though the final stretch gets a bit steeper. Allow yourself a good couple of hours if you want to dawdle at the top without feeling rushed. The best light hits the view in late afternoon, which means you can catch the lower slopes in shadow and the distant hills picked out sharp against the sky.

Walkers will find it's worth the effort - the terrain's decent underfoot and there's something satisfying about a peak that doesn't demand technical gear or excessive conditioning. Families with older kids should manage it fine; younger ones might find it a slog on a hot day. History buffs won't find much up there besides the landscape itself, but that's rather the point.
