About Hare Knoll

The walk up Hare Knoll rewards you with proper panoramic views across the White Peak - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people actually live in Derbyshire. It's not particularly high or dramatic, which is exactly why it works so well for a half-day outing from Bakewell.

The summit itself is modest but the approach is the thing. You get open moorland on the way up, the kind of walking where you can see for miles and the wind hits you properly. On a clear day the limestone hills roll away in every direction. It's walker territory really - not a stroll you'd drag reluctant teenagers to, but absolutely the sort of place where hillwalkers suddenly remember why they got out of bed.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The ground can be boggy in places so proper boots matter. There's no car park signage or visitor facilities that I'm aware of, which means it stays relatively quiet even on weekends.

If you're based at one of the campsites nearby - Chatsworth Park is closest at under three miles, or Secret Wood if you fancy something with a bit more atmosphere - Hare Knoll slots in nicely alongside the bigger peaks in the area. It's not a tick-box destination, but it's the sort of walk that gives you back more than you'd expect.
