About Hard Knott
Getting up there takes most people between 45 minutes and an hour depending on fitness, with the path climbing steeply through rough fell terrain. There's an old stone shelter at the top, which is more functional than Instagram-worthy, but it does offer a windbreak when you need one. The trig point marks the summit.
This one's for walkers with some grit. It's not a casual stroll - the gradient is relentless and the ground underfoot can be boggy. Kids aged ten and up with fell experience will manage it fine; younger ones might find it exhausting. History buffs should know there's a Roman fort (Mediobogdum) lower down the pass if you're interested in threading that into your walk.
If you're basing yourself at Great Langdale Campsite or Fisherground, Hard Knott works as a morning mission before breaking for lunch. The descent is trickier than the climb, so don't leave it too late in the day. No facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. Free to climb, obviously - it's a fell.
Worth doing if you're after proper mountain air and solitude. The crowds that swarm Catbells don't reach here.
