Hanter Hill Secondary Peak

The walk up Hanter Hill is bracing rather than brutal, and the views across Powys justify the effort. From Presteigne, you're looking at a moderate climb to a secondary peak that sits on the broader ridge, offering proper Welsh borderland scenery - rolling farmland, distant hills, the works. On a clear day the vistas stretch for miles, though I'll be honest: the summit itself is less dramatic than you might hope. It's a grass-topped knoll rather than some craggy throne, but that's precisely why families with older children (say, eight and up) tend to enjoy it. The walk is achievable without needing fell-running fitness, and there's something satisfying about bagging a peak that's genuine but not intimidating.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider ramble across the Mid Wales uplands, and it sits handily close to Presteigne itself - a proper market town with decent pubs and shops. If you're based at Presteigne Holiday Park, just three miles away, you could easily do this as a half-day outing. Hush Hush Glamping and Rockbridge Park, both within five miles, offer more upmarket bases if you want a bit of comfort after the hills.

Go in spring or early autumn when the weather's most cooperative. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and whether you're taking children.
