Hannah More Park

Just a short walk from Cheddar town centre, Hannah More Park is a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's named after the 18th-century writer and social reformer who lived nearby, though the park itself is really about the landscape - wooded paths, open grassland, and the kind of Somerset countryside that makes you remember why you came to the Mendips in the first place.

The walking here is straightforward and gentle, nothing that'll knacker you out. You'll find yourself looping through mixed woodland where the light filters through nicely, then breaking out into more open areas where you can actually see where you're going. It's the sort of place where you might spot wildlife if you're patient, though it's equally pleasant if you just want a proper walk without any of the faffing about.

Given how close it sits to Cheddar town and all the caravan parks - Cheddar Bridge, Cheddar Woods Resort, and the others clustered within a mile - this works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon outing when you're based nearby. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though there's nothing specifically laid on to keep them entertained beyond the walking itself. Allow an hour or so, longer if you're the type to potter about.

It's free, which is always welcome, and there's no real issue with when you visit - though spring and early summer are when the woodland comes alive. If you're staying at one of the local parks, this is well worth the short stroll.
