Hangman's Barrow

A Bronze Age barrow rising from the moorland just outside Redruth, Hangman's Barrow is one of those sites that rewards a bit of detective work to find. You won't find much signage or fanfare - just a grassy mound in the landscape, the kind of thing you'd walk straight past if you didn't know what you were looking at. But stand on it and you're literally standing on a burial monument from around 4,000 years ago. That's the real pull here.

It's free to visit and you can rock up whenever you fancy - no gates, no opening hours nonsense. Allow 20 minutes to find it, have a look around, and consider what someone decided was important enough to pile earth and stone over. The views across the moorland aren't dramatic, but they're proper Cornish - windswept and honest.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into archaeology. It's not the sort of place you'd plan an afternoon around, but if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Lanyon is barely a mile and a half away, or Tresyjo Glamping if you want something more upmarket - it makes a decent 30-minute detour on a walk. Pair it with other Bronze Age sites in the area or a moorland ramble, and it clicks into place as part of the bigger picture. Don't expect facilities or crowds. That's rather the point.
