The walk up Hameldon from near Bury is straightforward and rewards you with proper views across the Pennine moorland. It's moorland walking at its most unpretentious - rough ground underfoot, heather and bilberry in the right season, and nothing fancy in the way of facilities when you get there. The peak itself sits at just over 1,300 feet, which means you're not gasping for breath but you're high enough that the landscape spreads out properly beneath you.

Moorland walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place you'd build into a longer loop rather than visit solo, and the terrain sorts out the casual stroller from anyone who knows their way around a map. Expect sixty to ninety minutes from the car park to the summit depending on pace and how much you dally taking photographs. The views reach towards Winter Hill and beyond on a clear day, which they often aren't in Lancashire, but that's part of the appeal - you're walking when conditions suit you, not when Instagram says the light is perfect.

Free to access, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water and snacks. It fits well with the holiday parks nearby - Rossendale Holiday Cottages sits closest at just over four miles away, making this a proper morning walk before breakfast or a late afternoon mission when the light softens. Pendle View, further out, gives you access to broader moor country if this is your base for a week's walking.
