Hameldon Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the moors that slope down to its edges - and that's genuinely the whole appeal of Hameldon Reservoir. It's a walk, a bit of fresh air, and a proper sense of being out on the Lancashire hills without needing to trek for hours.

You park near Bury and head up to the dam. The reservoir itself isn't vast - you can walk around it in a couple of hours without breaking a sweat - but the setting works. Rolling moorland, the water catching light when the sun cooperates, and usually just enough people around to keep it from feeling too isolated.

This is walkers' territory, mainly. Families with young kids might find forty minutes enough before someone gets restless. Birdwatchers do well here too; you'll spot waterfowl and moorland birds if you're quiet about it. The paths are straightforward, though the terrain's boggy in places after rain, so proper boots matter.

Free to visit, no entry fees or facilities to speak of - it's the kind of place you fit into a wider moorland walk rather than plan an afternoon around by itself. If you're staying at Rossendale Holiday Cottages or Dearden Wood, it's an easy diversion. On a clear day the views open up properly. On a grey one - and this is Lancashire - it's moody in a way that works if you're in the mood for it. Worth the drive from Bury if you're after something quiet. Don't expect anything grand.
