Hall Leys Park

The River Derwent cuts through Hall Leys Park like it owns the place - which, frankly, it does. This nature reserve on Matlock's doorstep is where locals come to escape the tourist crush of the Peak District proper, and there's something rather nice about that. You get proper woodland walks, riverside paths that actually meander instead of charging uphill, and the chance to spot herons if you're quiet enough.

It's ideal for families who'd rather not spend three hours wrestling kids up a mountain. The walking is gentle, the river crossings manageable, and there's enough to occupy a couple of hours without feeling rushed. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile - the mix of woodland and water draws a decent variety of species. The reserve feels lived-in rather than manicured, which is refreshing. You're not paying to walk around someone's garden fantasy.

Matlock itself is just up the road, so Hall Leys works well as a morning activity before heading into town for lunch. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Packhorse Farm is barely a mile away, or Darwin Forest if you fancy something a bit more structured - you could easily add this into a caravan park weekend. The river's the thing here: it's proper cooling on warm days, and the light filtering through the trees at late afternoon is when the place really sings. Allow two hours minimum if you're doing any real walking.
