Hall Field Hill

The climb up Hall Field Hill is nothing special on the map, but once you're at the top near Skipton, the views across the Ribble Valley stop you dead. It's a proper fell walk without the drama - steep enough to feel like you've earned something, but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway up.

You're looking at grassland rather than moorland, which means it's gentle underfoot and fine in most weather. The summit gives you 360-degree views across to the Peak District on a clear day, and the valley floor spreads out below like a patchwork quilt. It's the sort of walk that takes two hours there and back if you're moving at a reasonable pace, which makes it perfect for families who've had enough of the car seat but aren't ready for a full day hike.

History types won't find much to detain them - there's no stone circle or tumulus at the top, just grass and views. But walkers will appreciate that you can string together several local peaks if you're staying longer. The Skipton area is strong for outdoor holidays, and staying at Holgates Ribble Valley puts you within striking distance of this and half a dozen other decent walks. Shay Gate Farm Campsite and Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley are also within easy reach if you want something smaller.

Go on a weekday if you can. The car park fills up on weekends, and half the peace of the thing evaporates when you're queuing with a hundred other people to get a selfie at the top.
