Hag Dyke Chapel

Tucked into the rolling moorland between Skipton and the Dales, Hag Dyke Chapel is a small, unfussy place of worship that catches most visitors completely off guard. It's barely a church at all in the conventional sense - more a simple stone building that's been doing its job quietly for centuries without fuss or fanfare.

The chapel sits alone on the hillside, which is precisely what makes it worth seeking out. There's something genuinely affecting about standing in a space where worshippers have gathered for generations, away from the tourist trail. The interior is plain and honest - whitewashed walls, basic pews, the kind of stripped-back spirituality you find dotted across the Pennines.

Historians and walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a proper find if you're rambling the moorland paths around here. The real draw is the isolation and the walk to reach it - proper Yorkshire countryside, the kind where you can hear yourself think.

If you're based at Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wood Nook Caravan Park nearby, both excellent spots for exploring the Dales, this makes an excellent morning walk. Allow an hour or so to get there and back, depending on your starting point. No facilities, no admission charge as far as I can tell - it's simply there, as it has been for hundreds of years. Not Instagram-worthy, but memorable nonetheless.
