Gwernydd Penbre

Out towards Burry Port, Gwernydd Penbre sits as one of those quiet South Wales landmarks that locals know better than visitors. It's a stone circle - proper Bronze Age stuff - and honestly, it's more substantial than you'd expect from the Carmarthenshire countryside. The stones stand weathered and austere against the sky, the kind of place where you notice the wind and the grass more than the crowds.

This is walker territory, no question. You're looking at a short ramble across open ground, nothing taxing, but the landscape matters as much as the stones themselves. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Gwlad Glamping or Parkdean Resorts Carmarthen Bay are closest at around 3.5 miles - it makes a decent morning or afternoon diversion. Bring kids who actually like history rather than ice cream stalls. Teenagers will find it dull unless they're into archaeology.

Access appears to be free and open, though there's precious little infrastructure. No visitor centre, no cafe, no gift shop. That's rather the point. Allow thirty minutes to an hour depending on how you feel about standing in a field contemplating four-thousand-year-old arrangements of rock. The nearest facilities are back in Burry Port, so plan accordingly.

It won't make your holiday alone - you're after something to tick off between the beach and a proper meal - but it's a genuine slice of prehistoric Wales without the tourist machinery. That matters.
