The Golden Coast isn't some manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops - it's a proper nature reserve that stretches along the Carmarthenshire shoreline near Burry Port, and you'll find it refreshingly understated. What you actually get is access to saltmarsh, mudflats, and dune systems that shift with the seasons, plus genuine birdwatching territory if you know what you're looking for. Waders, wildfowl, occasional rarities if you're lucky. The walking is straightforward rather than dramatic - nothing that'll blow your mind scenically, but solid coastal rambling with that particular Welsh light that makes everything look better than it probably is.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Pembrey Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which sits practically on the doorstep at just 0.4 miles away. Day-trippers from Shoreline Caravan Park or further afield towards Parkdean Resorts Carmarthen Bay won't find it a hassle either. Families with young kids will get restless quickly unless they're genuinely into spotting birds or collecting shells - it's not the sort of place with play areas or ice cream vans. Serious walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, though, will spend hours here without checking their watches.

Allow two to three hours for a decent explore, longer if you're photographing or birdwatching. It's free, which helps justify the journey, and there's no particular season that rules it out, though autumn and winter migration periods are obviously peak for ornithologists. Honest assessment: it's worth the detour if nature reserves genuinely interest you, but don't expect dramatics.
