Coed Penybedd

The woods around Coed Penybedd are proper quiet - the kind of place where you notice birdsong instead of traffic. It's a modest nature reserve just inland from Burry Port, thick with mixed woodland that feels genuinely wild without requiring any serious hiking boots. The paths meander through dense trees and open clearings, and on a decent day you'll spot woodland birds and possibly deer if you're lucky enough and patient.

This is one for people who actually enjoy walking rather than ticking off views. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of - just woodland. It's the sort of spot where families with young kids might manage 45 minutes to an hour before someone gets restless, though older children and proper walkers could spend a good couple of hours exploring. The paths aren't marked brilliantly, so bring a map or be prepared to wander a bit.

Free admission and no entry restrictions that I'm aware of. The reserve sits handily close to the holiday parks dotted around the area - Pembrey Country Park's caravan site is barely half a mile away. If you're camped at any of the parks stretching between Burry Port and Carmarthen Bay, Coed Penybedd works as a morning walk before heading to the coast. It's not dramatic, but it's genuine - a proper slice of South Wales woodland without the crowds.
